T-Shirt Experiments

I recently purchased a package of white Hanes shirts so that I can experiment with my fabric markers and paints. My previous textile work has been shoes and bags, so I wanted to see how washing would affect the colors.

I have been particularly drawn (ha) to the rabbit-mermaid, and I happened to have it on tracing paper next to my table. I measured the image on the shirt I was wearing and used a pencil to draw a rectangle on the white t-shirt.

I then traced the mer-rabbit onto the shirt. I didn’t have a plan for the colors other than using a different brand on each rabbit.

My favorite is the upper left, which was Sharpie (the Mystic Gem set specifically). However, my set is ultra fine tip, so it was hell laying the color down. The bottom left was Sharpie Stained, made specifically for clothing, and I was surprised by how bright the colors were!

The rabbits on the right were drawn with Tulip and Artezia colors. Both were fine. I like that Artezia has so many colors, but I’m not sure you could really see that in the final version. Tulip markers are probably the easiest to use, but my pink ran out of ink!

I washed the shirt yesterday, after it had two days to dry/sit in my freezing studio. None of the colors run and they all look great.
